ID:	6580When the Twins signed Kurt Suzuki back in December, it looked like they were adding a veteran backup catcher to the roster. After all, Suzuki has hit like a backup over the past four years (.650 OPS), served as a backup with two different clubs last season, and is getting paid like a backup at $2.75 million.

However, folks around camp are talking about the new addition as essentially a lock to open the season as Minnesota's starter behind the plate. ...

ID:	6572The Twins need to make some decisions about the back end of their bullpen. And those decisions might not be based on merit. To understand why, we need to talk about “options.” And my favorite way to talk about technical baseball transactions is to compare them to my marriage. Even if it means blatantly plagiarizing my own story. So let’s talk about…

  4. Minor Leaguers Deserve Better

I haven't written much lately. Honestly, I haven't even read much lately. Not about baseball, anyway. There just isn't much going on that I'm particularly interested in. Sure, spring training has started, but they haven't even started playing spring training games, yet, so there just isn't much going on to capture my interest.

I'm pretty sure I'll get more interested when the Grapefruit League games get underway. I guarantee I'll be more than casually interested a month from now when ...

  6. Keep the Ball In The Park

Phil Hughes might have had plenty of people betting MLB World Series in a real spin last year as he gave away plenty of home runs in the less than pitcher friendly environment in New York.

This year it may well be that in Minnesota he’s in a more laid-back atmosphere and more importantly in a far more pitcher friendly stadium. After seven seasons with the Yankees, Hughes signed a $24 million, three-year contract to make Target Field his new home.

    Hughes was originally ...

  7. Position Battle: Designated Hitter

ID:	6566In Josh Willingham, Oswaldo Arcia and Jason Kubel, the Twins have three players who are projected to be on the 25-man roster and are all probably best suited for designated hitter duty.

Each is likely to see some time in that role, but determining which player should be the true "designated DH" is essentially a matter of judging who provides the least defensive value.

Of course, the go-to designated hitter also has to hit enough to justify playing ...

  9. 10 Optimistic Predictions for 2014

Even amidst the 10-plus inches of snow (cue meat sauce) the Twin Cites area received in the past week, the promise of girls in bikinis and a clean-slate for baseball teams are soon approaching. Soon we will be trading in our winter hats, gloves, jackets and ice scrapers for baseball gloves, sun glasses and tans. So, for my first blog, I figured it would be apropos to begin thinking optimistically about our favorite major league ball team.

    10) Target Field will sell-out 15 games this ...

  10. Catch Framing Predictability

ID:	6548There has been more and more talk lately about catcher framing, which is the ability for catchers to impact the runs scored in a game by garnering strikes from pitches outside the strike zone. My initial skepticism around it has largely been due to the huge impact it can have. For instance, last year the difference between the best catch framer (Matt LuCroy) and the worst (John Buck) is estimated at 50 runs. That's a five win difference. That's hard to believe.
