1. How the World Cup Has Reinforced My Love for Baseball

I have actually enjoyed watching the World Cup. The games can be very entertaining; some of the goals scored will stay in my memory forever. It's been great to root on my country, and to watch other nations root on theirs. The tension while watching the U.S. games with other fans was delicious.

Still, the World Cup gave excellent examples of three things I do not like about the sport, three things that have never, and never will, plague baseball:

  2. Twins Minor League Report (7/10): Virgil Vasquez Goes the Distance

The Twins picked up a win on Thursday night thanks to another big game from Kendrys Morales against his former team. Morales had an important two-run double to help stretch the Twins' lead. The Twins have now won three straight games and head out to Colorado for some interleague play against the Rockies and Justin Morneau, Michael Cuddyer and LaTroy Hawkins.

Let's take a look at the Minor Leagues.

  3. A Tale of Two Gibsons

Kyle Gibson was lights out last night as he held the Mariners scoreless over six innings of work. He scattered 7 hits, but only walked one batter while striking out three to turn in his 8th dominate performance on the year, improving his overall record to 8 wins, 7 losses.

The problem is, there doesn’t seem to be any middle ground when it comes to Gibson’s starts. Either he’s lights out, like he was last night in Seattle (6.0IP, 7H, 0ER, 1BB, 3K) or he’s knocked out, like his

ID:	8167On Tuesday night it was announced that Minnesota Twins’ second baseman, Brian Dozier, would be participating in the Home Run Derby.

Without question, it will be an honor for him to smack dingers at his home stadium, with his home crowd, and even his own brother pitching to him, no less. The event, where the game's most prolific home run hitters get to sit on the grass, some with their families, and admire the powerful swings while listening to ESPN’s Chris ...
  5. Hump Day Happy Notes

Things are pretty bleak for Twins fans these days. The club is caught amidst yet another mid-summer free fall, the coaches and medical staff are once again coming under fire for their handling of injuries, and we're left to ponder who can be called up from Triple-A to plug yet another rotation hole while the offense scuffles.

The negative storylines are too easy to grasp onto at this point, so in an effort to change the tone a bit, I thought I'd focus on a few positive developments ...

  6. Hu's on first? No, he's pitching (for the Kernels)

The merry-go-round that is a minor league team's roster continued to spin over the weekend in Cedar Rapids as the Kernels saw two pitchers promoted to high-A Fort Myers, one infielder put on the 7-Day Disabled list and two new pitchers arrive from Elizabethton.

The new pitchers, right handed starting pitcher Chih-Wei Hu and righty bullpen arm Jake Reed, were in uniform for Tuesday night's series opener with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, won by the Kernels, 15-5.

  7. Gardy -- He's Gotta Go

If you follow me on Twitter, you probably know that something clicked -- something changed -- last night. The most thorough and comprehensive Twins beat writer, Mike Berardino, tweeted a series of quotes from Twins' manager Ron Gardenhire on player injuries. And it set me off. In fact, it might be fair to say that I freaked out. I tweeted a bunch of things, but decided to wait ...

  8. Expectations for Free Agent Starting Pitchers

We've all been woefully disappointed by Ricky Nolasco so far. We've all been pleasantly pleased by Phil Hughes so far. We've had the unfortunate pleasure of watching Mike Pelfrey. We've been satisfied with Kevin Correia after some initial hatred.

Bringing in four free agents to fill the rotation over two years is a departure from the norm for our Twins. Signing two of them to multi-year deals that were both worth more than the previous team-high free agent contract (Willingham, $21M) ...

  10. Twins Minor League Report (07/08): Alex Meyer Shines, Mike Kvasnicka Glows

The Twins pulled out a late night win against the Mariners. Phil Hughes pitched 7.1 shutout innings and Sam Fuld hit a go-ahead home run, his first as a Twin. Brian Dozier hit an RBI sac fly to increase the lead to 2-0 late in the game and the bullpen shut down the Mariners bats.

  14. Nolasco Presents a Big Problem

Beyond this season, the Minnesota Twins still owe Ricky Nolasco a total of $37 million over three years. That's something that needs to be kept in mind as we ponder what the best course of action is for the struggling starter.

Ron Gardenhire sounded like he was just about ready to be done with Nolasco during a cranky post-game interview on Sunday, and it's hard to blame him.

"It starts with him," Gardenhire said. "He's got to do a better job. Bottom line is he's got to
