"He made two good trades bringing in power arms Alex Meyer and Trevor May to a depleted farm system."

The real question is how the minor league system became so depleted with pitching prospects? The Twins should be trying to steal away some scouts who actually know what they are doing. That is where the Twins need to pump some of their money they refuse to use on a fielding an actual competitive team.

The spending/ non-spending is a tough call. The Twins conceivably could've kept one of Span or Revere and then just been a middle-infielder and a bench out of offense competition. They could've spent $20-25 million on a couple more higher end free agents, and appear to be much more competitive than they are now. As the team currently stands, they want Correia for 2014 but not Pelfrey. Might as well trade Morneau, entertain offers on Willingham, and go ahead and start Buxton in 2013 (it worked for Harper and Trout). If we need to suffer, be it watching the so-called potential, rather than the rehads and minor league free agents.

No, the savings from last year (spent in the draft, supposedly) and the epic savings this year, combined with the TC money coming in next year...I still see the Twins paying off their aprt of the Target Field loan sooner rather than later.

Of course, season ticket holders get a 10% discount on concessions in 2013.

Final question: who will be the Twins lone All-Star in 2014. Well, I guess Mauer is a fer sure if he wants to play. But if not Mauer, than who?

You are reaching on your comments on how the other teams improved. Detroit essentially moved Young for Hunter. Temporary upgrade. Chicago signs a gut after a career year, resigns their own players, lose their almost all star catcher. That is improvement? Scott Kazmir was not even the best pitcher on his indi team league last year. Wade Davis was repeatedly tried as a starter by Tampa. Ended up back in the bullpen.
Bankers want a return on their investment. The big dogs of free agency are not going to a last place team. (Jackson is another 3-4 starter, look back and see how teams have used him) The mediocre are not really worth the money unless you are trying to fill out a roster.

You are so right and it is so true. We get fool that ours christmas won't be come for 3 more years. Right or wrong what can we do till then, just line his pockets? Can you trust a liarer and a cheapskate? It is a very sad time to be a Twins fan and I see no reason for it!

Until this Kmart shopping attitude changes the Twins will continue to be at the bottom of the cellar in the A.L. Central.

If it happens more than I think why couldn't you even come up with an example to prove me wrong. The big time high dollar free agents do not go to losing teams in mid sized markets that are losing. So if it is more than I think then come up with something better than a Royals signing of Jeff Francis or Meche. Something in the last 5 years. It has nothing to do with cheapness, it is the notion of playing on a winning team is attractive when you are paid well.
Carl Pavano was a free agent when he resigned with the Twins. Per year that would be the largest contract. Lucky for the Twins it was not a three year contract.

Maybe Terry Ryan was fooled. He thought by offering good contracts to players they would sign them. The nabobs of negativity on this board really have no idea what the dynamic is between the free agents and the teams. Blame the GM. What near all star player or better has ever signed with a mid to small market, almost devoid of talent, team as an free agent with no prior connection to the team? That is the hard part of rebuilding.

And people wondered why more and more posters moved to the "dark side" even before the off-season? Some of us would simply rather be "pleasantly surprised" than to get kicked in the teeth again.

Yes, there is still time and a few limited opportunities for Terry Ryan to salvage this off-season but as of right now, things don't look good. And, ironically, that's true whether -- before the offseason -- you hoped for a complete rebuild OR you thought they could be competitive in 2013.

Who was fooled and how? Did anyone think they were going to get any big name pitchers? If so they were just hoping as Ryan was pretty clear that none of those big names were going
It is just partway into the off season. Fooled again? Does there need to be a move everyday to satisy the people on this board? Sites have reported the Twins were in the running for Marcum. Has he signed somewhere else? Is there somewhere desirable courting him? None reported

Half of you complain they didn't sign so and so, the other half complain that the same pitcher is a stiff not worth the money. If the knowing fans on this board can't come to an agreemeent, how must it be for a group of people with knowledge and scouting reports. No wonder they procede cautiously.
No but the moves we make should have 1 thing in common, improve the team...
Kevin Correia is nothing more then a filler .....if by chance he has a decent season ,good for him ,but his 10 year track record says other wise..
15. johnnydakota's Avatar
Agreed and liking , but i for 1 have wondered about Brandon Webb , i dont think we offer him a baker type contract but instead offer him a split contract and allow him to progress at his own rate and time table.

He's a guy the Twins may have drafted if they drafted earlier in 2011. The Nats drafted him, paid him a $2 million bonus, and the Twins got to see him pitch at two levels in 2012. They dealt from a position of strength in the organization. And if you look at the overall picture, Span is a great contract, but to advertise him as the best centerfielder out there is hardly a given. They are a lot of similar, if not better (and higher priced) centerfielders as free agents, a decent choice of corner outfielders, and other teams willing to part with players. Just as long as he doesn't pull up totally lame (you can live thru Tommy John), this is a great top of the rotation pitcher. For an organization that has questionable prospects, it made us look better with Gibson, Wimmers, Hermson, Salecedo, Hendriks, maybe Hernandez, plus Barrios and possibly Bard filling spots in 2014 and 2015. We all have this "win now" mentality brewing....but the Twins may have too many holes and not enough committed funds to pull it off in 2013.

I do praise you for taking a different approach. But really besides the fact that he (might not) reach the majors, there aren't a lot of negatives.

Also, many reports say he throws between 93-99 mph. The 93-95ish mph are his 2seamer which is pretty impressive. He's above average for a major league pitcher in the velocity department and leaps and bounds ahead of the Twins options. We need front of the rotation pitchers and span would never have brought us a big league or big league ready starter that could eventually even have the potential to be a top of the rotation guy. We got the best player we could have.
