Probably a bad post-game buffet. His quotes are certainly interesting. He was clearly not happy to leave Detroit.

Matt Lawton had feuded with the Twins front office before -- they had some notable differences in contract negotiations, and he was going year-to-year until free agency (which he was set to get after the 2002 season).

I also recall some grumblings from the front office about Mark Redman, a lot of it stemming from his 2001 injury and rehab -- I think the implication was he was taking too long. Your TR quote offers some support for this.

But whatever the motivation, the Lawton-Reed swap was definitely one of TR's bolder moves, although it was also fairly prudent, as we had a lot more confidence in our OF prospects at the time than our SP prospects (and rightly so).

The Redman-Jones swap was less of a bold move, and perhaps a bit misguided, as Jones predictably made almost no difference to the 2001 season, while Redman did produce a couple more decent cheap seasons. But Redman never had much value, as evidenced by his future trades and releases, and as Hawkins was melting down, the 2001 Twins bullpen was indeed in rough shape. (As compared to 2010, when the bullpen was actually pretty solid but simply lacked a "proven closer" when they traded for Capps)

I like that, kind of an instant karma/deal with the devil scenario. You get to play for the winner, but we're going to take your career. Very creepy.

Yeah, these trades were all pretty poor, although, Erickson specifically didn't seem to have a ton of value according to the old articles I read.

Yeah, I would have thought there would have been at least one notable success story. J.T. Snow wasn't bad, but hardly the type of hitter I hope Hicks becomes.

Man, that is a pretty lousy list of batters who've floated on the to-switch-hit-or-not-to-switch-hit bubble.

What kind of culture do the Twins have that they run off player after player.

That's awesome, I looked him up and he had some crazy stats. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'd make the trade too, as a rational adult. It was a huge return.

My Grandma was really bummed too.

I remember West being the central piece of this trade. Watching him pitch he looked awkward. Almost side armed. High fastball, but no movement and not much else.

My Mom had a huge crush on Frankie, and she was devastated too.....

I was sorry to see him go, but at the time I agreed with the trade. (I was 24 at the time, not 7, so I probably wasn't as emotionally attached to individual players.)

In hindsight, I would make that trade again in a heartbeat. 1991 seals the deal for me. Pitchers are temporary. Championships are forever.

Here's another former Twin, in this case, a farmhand at Class A-Wisconsin Rapids in the 1970s or early 80s. The guy's name is Elmer "Moe" Hill, and he put up spectacular numbers at Class A, winning the triple crown one year, but never making it higher than Class A.

Yeah, I think the return for Perkins would be very underwhelming. Thus, I'd keep him, because I love him and he's good.

    Glen Perkins for Matthew Summers

Of all these interesting ideas, this was the worst. It was your way-offiest.

    Fun stuff to think about.

I'm happy to know that my non-hate will be properly balanced out. I also appreciate all the synonyms.

Also, Twins fans aren't required to hate the Yankees. There are many other alternatives:

Despise, detest, loathe, abhor, intensly dislike... My thesaurus ran out, but I'm sure there are more options.
