Bill Smith was not the gm when the draft failed to produce players the last few years, in terms of adding to the MLB team. Bill Smith did not quit, rather than handle the Santana situation. Ryan is not free from being part of the problem. And, this offense was 11th in the AL last I checked, in terms if runs scored, so I don't get why people think it is fine and dandy. They did not spend money to get better, they filled New holes with cheaper guys, but rather than invest those savings, they pocketed them.

I also cringe a bit at your acceptance of standing pat because Sano, Arcia and others are coming in 2014. Yes, they're coming as ROOKIES. None of our prospects project to be a Bryce Harper-style rookie, and goodness knows that if even one of them did, he wouldn't stand a chance of playing under Gardy's abject disdain for bravado, energy and competitiveness.
I guess we could be the Royals or Pirates. Frankly I will take being a playoff team 70% of the time vs. being a powerhouse one year and floundering for five. It depends if you are in it for the Glory or the Ride (I wrote about this earlier in the year).

The methodical/conservative approach allowed the Twins to be competitive for a decade. Bill Smith destroyed that in a matter of a few years. Ryan will build it back up again. No reason to believe otherwise.

BTW - The Bryce Harper (or Mike Trout for that matter) comparison is not entirely fair. For one, his type of skill set does not come around very often. Second, for all of his brovado, he has been the model player since coming to the bigs. Many articles have been written about his turnaround. Third, the Twins but up with Delmon Young's BS, the would work with the right player.

Some of that money will go towards a few free agents, the rest will be reinvested into the team via in-system players, and non-personnel areas. This is one big myth about the Pohlads, that they pocket any dollar they can. It is simply not true. They give Ryan a budget, a % of overall revenue, and he sticks to it. If the budget goes up, so do salaries (like 2010). If the budget goes down, so do salaries. Ryan himself has said that he can go over budget if the player will better the team, and the situation is right.

I agree that they need to upgrade their pitching, but dropping big contracts on pitchers is not the answer. Who would you rather have right now? Tim Lincecum or Chris Sale? Do you see Tampa Bay dropping $18-$20m for a starting pitcher? They are doing exactly what the Twins did for 15 years, but they are on the back end of a high cycle right now. The Twins will continue to look to make bargain purchases in their pitching, keep their core, and invest in their prospects. Simple as that.

    1) The ridiculous refusal to expand replay, and some of the silly elements against it. (e.g. "I like the human element". Really? I'm glad surgeons and airline pilots don't think this way and resist using the aid of technology in their professions because of some irrational fondness for human error.)

    2) Takeout slides and home plate collisions should be forbidden. They create unnecessary risks of injury and add nothing to the game.

    3) Agree on "unwritten rules". If it's that bad, then officialize it and write it into the rules. Otherwise, it's legal and no grounds for complaint.

    4) Not crazy about the whole closer thing. I don't like the way 'saves' are define, but I grew up watching guys like Goose Gossage enter the game in the seventh inning with guys on base and go the rest of the way. They were called "firemen" for a reason. But starting the 9th with a 3-run lead? Please.

I like this post. Except for the defensive indifference, I completely agree with thes.

Do agree with the save situation.....unbelievable that you manage to accumulate stats.
Rest I dont have a problem with.
Stolen base credits could be a reason that they numbers are down in steals from past decades.

Sacrifice bunting in the first or second inning. Giving up an out that early doesn't make sense, but Gardy did it consistently during interleague play. Also when a pitcher hits a batter when he's ahead 0-2. Pitch inside yes, but not that far.

Well, on the bunting during a no-hitter thing...

If it's 5-0 I don't want Revere bunting even if it is a no-hitter. Down by 5 runs that late I want him to try and hit a double and get into scoring position rather than bunt to try and break up the no-hitter.

    If it's 1-0, I say bunt away.

I agree with you that Bowden's an idiot. He is also a low handed snake in the grass, opportunist, and egomaniac.

To kill time in the outfield Hatcher was know to stand his glove on the turf and kick field goals. My brother worked with Mickey for the Albuquerque Dukes. One night at the bar several times my brother saw Mickey talking with girls at pointing over at him. Later in the night some girl finally asked my brother how long he had been Mickey Hatcher's bodyguard.

I am glad(den) you enjoyed your time putting these stats together. Why Danny Ainge? Why not Chuck Connors or Neon Deion? What is the point? I would much rather read a comprehensive article on how you think Dan Gladden should be immasculated, fired from his job and run out of town. At the very least, an article about his ****ty mullet from the late 80's would have sufficed, Danny Ainge is ho hum...

Ainge definitely "battled his tail off."

Realistically the onslaught of fans being fed up with this team is happening fast, the Twins can't win ballgames this year with the pitching staff they have. This is really going to be an ugly, ugly year.

I agree with alot of this so much its scary! after watching and or listening on radio since 1972, I ,m seriously considering to cancel my Extra Innings package that i covet on directv. I can't bring myself to it tho Its like leaving your wife of 40 years only because she hurts your feelings. Damn you twins!
