Official Twins Winter Meetings Day 4 Thread

The big news yesterday was superstar third baseman Anthony Rendon agreed to a deal with the Angels, but we also heard Eddie Rosario’s name kicked around in trades – and those reports came from other teams. The bad news is we didn’t hear anything from Madison Bumgarner and Hyun-Jin Ryu. That’s also the good news. What will Day 4 bring?

Rendon Fallout
The Angels paid dearly for Anthony Rendon, agreeing to a seven-year, $245M contract. Does that mean they are less likely to chase a starting pitcher that the Twins have their eyes on? Or more likely?

It also means that third baseman Josh Donaldson is not the top free agent position player, and we keep hearing the Twins are in the mix for him. If the Twins determine they can’t sign Bumgarner or Ryu, do they take the $30+ million of available payroll and pivot to a deal with Donaldson? Do you feel comfortable offering the 34-year-old the four-year deal he desires?

Rosario Rumors
The trade rumors that have swirled around Eddie Rosario this winter picked up steam yesterday, including a report that the Marlins had been asking about him and found the price very high. Coincidentally, Cooper Carlson wrote up a story yesterday detailing some Marlins starting pitchers that could be targets for the Twins.

Waiting on the Big Arms
We didn’t get a decision from Bumgarner or Ryu yesterday, though we did hear that some of the big boys like the Dodgers are now involved. So maybe no news was good news? It appears there is no longer any reason for either player to delay making a decision – they are clearly the best options remaining on the market – so one would think news should be coming soon. Patrick Wozniak has a story that will be published later today on the challenges of landing an ace.

If the Twins don’t end up with one of them, there are also trade targets waiting for the market to settle. Can I interest you in David Price? You’ll be able to read about possibilities of making with a trade with the Red Sox for Price later today, courtesy of Cody Christie.

Bullpen Buzz
Suddenly, we’re hearing the Twins might be interested in some big-time bullpen arms, including Dellin Betances, the lights-out, former Yankees reliever who is recovering from an Achilles injury. Sergio Romo is still available, too.

Rule 5 Draft today
The Twins might grab someone, but are more likely to lose someone in the Rule 5 draft today. Ted detailed some of the Twins farmhands that might be at risk a couple of weeks ago.

last day is rule 5 draft. That's usually on a Friday when I freak out over losing some career minor leaguer that I now can't remember....

Once upon a time both Bumgarner and Porcello committed to UNC - the same class as Matt Harvey. Could have been a pretty fair college rotation.

Do something geez...
I'm scared with Price's injury history. At $31m, it's a pass for me, but if Boston is picking up $5m+, it looks a little better. Medical staff would have to be fairly certain he doesn't have lingering issues.

How many more years does Cruz have left? Donaldson could slide into the DH after Cruz is gone. Have heard he is a dick in the locker room

Will anxiously await the results of the Rule 5 draft, John.Expect the chances are better than 50/50 that at least one of Javier, Jax or Rijo won't be a Twin come noon.Would be gut wrenching to lose two of them and I really hope I am wrong.

Not expecting our FO to do anything at this point. Nothing meaningful anyway.Teams seem to be moving quickly this off season while we look for the best "bargains"Maybe Falvey and Levine are scared after getting burned at last seasons trade deadline. Their trade for Dyson may have been one of the worst trades of the year. And they did nothing to address the starting pitching situation that we are now in...But I will admit that our FO sure knows how to talk a good game.

I didn't even know Northern Colorado had a baseball program.

Big fan of the FO and everything they've done so far but the lack of activity this week has been a disappointment. It feels like they're suffering from analysis paralysis.

Even seeing yesterday that Don Kelly who was apparently their top candidate to be the 2020 Bench Coach was hired away by Pittsburgh before they even got around to scheduling a meeting with him. It's been all but given that Shelton was leaving for over a month and the hiring was announced over a week ago. Shouldn't they have had a list of candidates lined up and maybe even some prelim discussions in the works BEFORE he officially left?

I never like it when they lose people in the Rule 5 early in the round, then pick a guy later. Hell of a lot easier to keep a guy on the 40 man than the 25(6) man roster.

As for the Angels and what they will do after the Rendon signing, I would bet that they are even more likely to sign another SP. I would suspect that it is Ryu if the LAD are indeed going after madbum. Both of these teams have a lot of money they want to spend. If that happens that leaves Keuchel to be battled for by 7-8 teams besides the Twins. Might be time to buy early on our Wade Miley or Julio Tehran jerseys.

Donaldson will be fought for by Was, Atl and Tex. Falvine has looked into him and by now turned the other way.

I wasn't advocating it but I thought he was a sure thing.Former Cy Young winner fits the 'impact pitcher' narrative, available for a 1 or 2 year deal.

It's interesting how the FO has been so right on most of the guys they dropped or left unprotected that were mourned so heavily.A quick glance at the latest production from Chargois, Burdi and Rodriguez backs them up pretty well. Now, if you include MiLB trades, cough, cough .... Nick Anderson ... cough, cough, it doesn't look quite so shiny.

Has that ever happened to us? Nick Burdi, maybe, but I don't think we're losing sleep over him...

Yeah, and Nick Anderson was a guy were were going to leave unprotected -- but I suspect we somehow knew he was a likely selection -- so we traded him and let Miami protect him instead. But we didn't get much back... why not just protect him?

I don't think Ryu is a good fit for the Angels as they have injury issues in the rotation already. They would probably rather have 2 pitchers who can throw 180 innings with more certainty Keuchel and Terehen. They have other holes to fix as well. I think we are waiting to see if Madbum goes to LA.

Expect he is talking about North Carolina Chief! But yes, Northern Colorado does have a baseball team. They play in the WAC against teams like New Mexico, NM State, Air Force, etc.
