Wow, i'm surprised Doumit isn't at catcher today after a night game. Mostly I was hoping for this so Mauer would catch both Friday and Saturday when I'm there.

Like the Speed at the bottom... Now if they would only run... Well actually get on base first... if they do that... Then put some pressure Mr. Haren and Wilson.

I'm also making the call for a Parmelee Home Run today off Haren. Parmelee loves the low ball... Haren will deliver it.

I wasn't sure which Liriano would show up today: the 7 and 2/3 innings of 3 hit Liriano; or the 2 and 2/3 innings of 8 hit Liriano that gets his pitch count up to 50 before the second inning ends. Unfortunately, this looks to be the latter of the two.
Hopefully he can get some stability here.

He looks totally off. His delivery is all jacked up. How this happens to a once-elite pitcher is really bizarre. How does he not have a consistent delivery that isn't all wonky?

Riverbrian
04-12-2012, 12:59 PM
Striking out with a runner on third and one out happens but if you make over 20 million it really can't. Score that run and the game could be different.

Disclaimer... I like Mauer... I really do but he's in the three hole for exactly that moment. A run scored in that at bat and it makes a difference with a head case on the mound.

Disclaimer... I like Liriano... But buck up and compete. Pickup your teammates when they fail. That pitcher on the other side named Dan Haren is real.

Actually, I think it makes perfect sense that a "once-elite" pitcher doesn't have a consistent delivery. Liriano V1 (pre-TJS) had such electric stuff, he was able to get by without having sound mechanics and a smooth, fluid, repeatable motion. At the rate he was going in 2006, no pitching coach in his right mind would have messed with that delivery. Now that Liriano is a coupla years removed from Tommy John Surgery and is getting older, he is having trouble re-inventing himself using the mechanics and tools he has today in 2012. Quite clearly, the Liriano of today is nowhere near Liriano V1. That guy is dead & buried. Time to move on from thinking the guy we are watching now is the same as Liriano V1 from 2006. Two totally different pitchers.

I am so tired of hearing that the job of the 2nd hitter in the bottom of the first inning is to advance one runner one base. This isn't the dead ball era. His job is to get on base. Anything else is a failure. You can't get on base every time, I understand that. But the idea that not getting on base is a success is an insult to our intelligence.

A wasted at bat by Span. You can't get 5 RBI's in one swing to tie the game. Move those Runners over its the third inning. If Mauer and Span are going to perform like this. Let's get ready for tomorrow.

I disagree... Moving the runner from 1st to 2nd can be a waste but if a runner is on second with no out. A productive out makes a ton of sense. If you walk into a game just expecting to base hit your way to victory... That is too much of an all or nothing way of approaching the game.

You don't have to bunt but hit behind the runner. It doesnt even mean make out. Just hit the ball behind the rinner. With a runner on third and one out, the runner can score on a flyball, grounder or Home run. It increases your odds.

Well, the Twins got what they wanted--the sacks juiced with the two former MVPs up and........nothing. Honestly, even with all of Mauer's struggles last year, I don't remember him popping up to an infielder. I actually don't recall a single time where Mauer was retired by the infield fly rule. Probably going out of his comfort zone and trying to mash one.

Riverbrian
04-12-2012, 01:30 PM
In his defense... He wasnt thrown a single strike. Tough umping in that sequence... But yeah. Show some leadership. Hand the bat to the umpire and say "do you want to try reaching across and hitting that". Then I'd take off my jersey and set it on fire at home plate ala Jimi Hendrix.

I was at home watching on TV (over lunch) and they were both borderline on the black. The first I thought looked slightly more outside, the second they showed on Fox-tracker or whatever they call it and the very inside of the ball nicked the outside corner at just above the knees.

Exactly the same thing I thought. Darn good pitching and there wasn't really one that most hitters could do much with.

As for people getting frustrated with Mauer, he's now gone 1-3 with runners in scoring position in this game, it's almost like what should be expected from a career .323 hitter....that is if you understand that clutch hitting is a myth. I'm sure people it's more about frustration over the teamin general, but hitters, no matter how good, are going to have streaks where they don't get hits, runners on or not.

Yes, I know Scosica likes to run. I guess the question should have been, 'what's with Mauer/Liriano allowing so many SBs?' Angels had 1 SB up to this game, now have tied for the AL lead in SBs. BTW, Mark Trumbo with a SB? Really?

Why not pinch hit Plouffe for Revere with a lefty coming in late in the game? We need offense right now, and might have to sacrifice defense for it.

A couple of reasons. Revere is more likely to reach base and we need baserinners to catch up And Revere will probably bat In the ninth and we might need the big fly then.

He didn't need a hit. He needed to plate a run at the very least. It's 6 to 5 right now if he does and Mauer has 5 RBI's. I also contend that scoring in the 1st Heartens Liriano and maybe the 2nd inning goes better. Maybe. But I do know that even Mickey Mantle bit the dust on occasion.

Anyone else think the grass is a little long (both OF and IF). It's really slowing the roll of the ball. Does this play to our advantage?

Mauer single, followed by a Morneau Homer. Thats the way it should be in a 1 run game.

Jeff Gray in line for the win again, with only two pitches thrown this game. This could be 2 wins for him in 2 days on three total pitches. The "wins" statistic is surely the dumbest stat in baseball.

I was thinking that we'd want to have short grass resembling the ground ball and infield hit success of the metronome... also helps with bunting... but in the outfield, we are prettying slow and sluggish get to balls.

Hunter's single should have been a double play. A crappy play/circumstance like that- hitting the second base bag- isn't Capps' fault. Pujols and Trumbo's hits... yeah, that's on Capps.

Nice to see the bats wake up in a big way......... Capps got a bad break with the ball hitting 2b and the missed DP call at 1B. Giving up a hit to Trumbo and especially Puljos not exactly something to be ashamed of.

It's Sad. But True.

If Capps gave up five rockets and got the save, it would be more concerning. Two of the six balls were hit well IMHO. It is true that he needs to get a few Ks. 93-94 w/ marginal movement isn't enough to handle good major league hitters.

That was the kind of game that can age a MoFo a few years, but it was fun to watch! The pitching was pretty lackluster except for Burnett. It was damn nice to see Mauer, Morneau and Willingham go yard and have Span play like I know he can. If Span, Mauer, and Morneau can stay healthy this can be a pretty solid offensive ball club. We will need to be as the pitching is going to continue to be substandard. Talent cannot be taught.
