AccuWeather's hourly forecast has another hour or so of "light rain", then very low precip probabilities after that. I think they get this game in.

Didn't see the play, but I think with his past back problems, his game has to be to minimize risk of injury. It's most evident in his defense, but he's also tied with Morneau for least-likely to get sent by the third-base coach and not solely on the basis of speed, and he probably gets a pass on any baserunning decisions he chooses to make.

Bert keeps acting like this is do or die for Hendriks. There do seem to be fans frustrated with Hendriks, too, and he's obviously been pretty bad up in the bigs. But, why do people give him a shorter leash than Dozier, for example? I mean both players have comparable time in the big leagues and neither have looked good. The difference is, Hendriks has already pitched well in AAA and is younger.

I would add that there are not a lot of prospects ready to take his place. Also, if Pelfrey continues to pitch like he did yesterday, then that hole will need to be filled.

Mssrs. Mauer and Morneau are not hitting the ball well. Twins chances diminish to near nothing when the heart of the order is dormant. How many hard hit balls have those two combined to hit? I would say less than 10. On a related note, I don't think Morneau will ever be what he once was, meaning his Twins' career will (and should) end either at the trading deadline or the close of his season.

Mauer's career swinging strike rate: 4.1%.

2013 rate: 8.6%.

Even though swings that miss pitches in the zone seem much more frequent, there's only about a 2% increase from last year.

It's the swings at pitches outside the zone that are killing him. He's only swinging at them about 3% more often, but missing them half again as often - 50% contact rate outside the zone this year vs. about 75% career.

That seems like a huge fluke, and his numbers will improve as it evens out.

I tried this in my garage. The closest I got was "neither a burro nor a mmmmmmm".

There were also a couple of unforeseen problems.

1. They produce a lot of data. It takes a lot of people to comb thru it.
2. They eat a lot of food. It's cost prohibitive when you are dealing infinite.
3. They go to the bathroom and the bathroom is pretty much right where they are.
4. They are stronger than they look. One of them ripped my cat in two.

Not as learned regarding teh cyberzmetric as many other TD posters, but figured it couldn't hurt to throw it out there.

More fun with small samples: Mauer's ground ball rate is just 2% above his career rate, but his flyball rate is about 10% lower this year, while his line drive rate is about 10% higher.

Don't know what that means, other than that like the swing/miss outside the zone thing, it's early in the season and it will even out eventually.

If you were Gardy, what would you say to the team after tonight's game?

Alright gather round... Watch this... I can turn my eyelids inside out. I'm a zombie... I'm a zombie.

Remember the good old days when Mauer coming to the plate inspired confidence and hope?

Yes, I now see the wisdom in the earlier comment to fire him if he takes advice from TD.

I would jump on Doumits back and say "I'm riding a furry tractor".

The Twins will probably lose tonight but you have made me smile so much with your humor that I feel less bad than normally.

Annnnd... Rally Avatar is down.

Really not sure what to do with her. She has failed as a starter and now as a closer. Promising rookie, but a proper role must be determined.

Edit: Yesterday's rally avatar will not return. In scouting terms, didn't have the good face. Today's, my scouts inform me, does not suffer from that defect, and appears to have good makeup as well.

How many more games before Hicks gets sent down?

The Twins ran through the AAA stop sign and sent him to the home opener, so I'm sure they can ignore a 57 cent batting average and 50% K rate for several more series. After all, it's just cybermetrics.

Also, who would they bring up to replace him?

They will be improved enough in 2013 that there will be less shame in this one than in some of the other broomings the Twins are due for...

Look at it this way... Real bad hitters hit around .180. No one hits .057... 2 hits in 35 at bats...

So to raise that average to .180... He will have to go 7 for 15.

7 for 15 will be a nice hot streak. May win us a game or two.

He's comin.

This is sound baseball logic and can not be refuted.

You're right, the stars will almost certainly align soon in a way that brings the ball in contact with Hicksie's bat at a higher rate, leading to the belief by the Twins that he suddenly 'gets it', thereby prolonging the inevitable to everyone's detriment. But hey, good defense in CF.

Seriously... I think he will be in Rochester real soon. I mean real soon. It's gotta be killing the kid.

Rick Ankiel may go down in history as the most out of control baseball player ever.

Pitcher... Rushed to the big leagues only to miss the strike zone by yards consistently...

Re-invents himself and makes it back to the big leagues with prodigious power only to produce strike outs at a stunning rate.

He's like "the natural" but completely flawed.

Not to mention that it will now, given your prodigious memory, be with you forever.

It's too bad the Mets travel on to Denver, otherwise they could drop Hicks off at Rochester on their way home Sunday night.

Why do I feel a Clete Thomas renaissance in the making?

Gardy was not happy with the Hicks duck walk into 2B in the 7th. Rookies tend to not like Gardy's doghouse.
