Lineup courtesy of Joe Christensen:
Twins lineup vs. LHP Price (Sat.): Span 8, Carroll 6, Mauer 2, Morneau 3, Willingham 9, Doumit DH, Valencia 5, Plouffe 7, Casilla 4 (Pavano)

Looks like the regular, every day line... encouraging to see Plouffe get the start instead of Revere against a left-hander.

Yeah that is encouraging to see. Might Gardy really stick with the platoon in left if things pan out for Plouffe in spring training?

Game time is 12:05 central time. Unfortunately, the Gophers basketball game will be on 1500espn until about 2. At that time, they will start airing the Twins game, tape-delayed. I am hoping that I can listen to the Twins game live on mlb.com.

Just saw that Francisco Liriano and Terry Doyle will flip-flop. Liriano to start against Red Sox while Doyle will get the Rays.

Per Tampa Bay Times beat writer Marc Topkin (follow him on Twitter (https://twitter.com/#!/TBTimes_Rays)), here's the Rays starting lineup:

"#Rays (https://twitter.com/#!/search/%23Rays) lineup v. Twins: Jennings lf, Upton cf, Zobrist 2b, Joyce rf, Molina c, Lobaton dh, Miranda 1b, Johnson 3b, Brignac ss, Price p"

BJ Upton smacks a one-out double off of Pavano down the left field line with one out in the first.

Ben Zobrist taps a ball in front of the plate that Mauer had to jump out of his crouch to field and fire down to first. Rays broadcasters are giving Mauer a ton of credit for looking much better and more mobile getting to that ball. Two outs in the first, Upton on third.

Matt Joyce rocks a two-run home run off of Pavano, deep beyond the right field fence.

Listening to Cory Provus describe the Twins and Rays uniforms is pretty cool. Very detailed. Yoo much Gladden!

Parker Hageman
03-03-2012, 12:24 PM
Wow. Rays broadcasters just said that the Win-Loss record is "too archaic". I'm impressed.

Jamey Carroll takes a 94-mph David Price fastball off the helmet. He stays on his feet and takes first base. Tough as nails. Gritty. Punto-esque.

Seth Stohs

It's a new year for the Twins!! Jamey Carroll hit in the helmet by a David Price fastball. He bounces up, goes to 1B and says he's OK!!!

Provus tells us that Joe Mauer is working this spring on taking a lot of pitches. Just took a called third strike.

Seth Stohs
03-03-2012, 12:30 PM
Not to be outdone, Morneau takes a called third strike on a full count to end the 1st inning.

It think it's safe to say that it's going to take Mauer/Morneau a few PAs to get into game shape at the plate.

Parker Hageman

I'll say it: I have a huge crush on the Tampa Bay Rays organization. They do things right - using both scouting and stats to get an advantage.

Was it me, or did it seem like Morneau got a bigger applause in his ab than Mauer?

Maybe even a couple against guys not in the David Price category.

It definitely sounded like it to me.

Bit of a breeze blowing out in Ft Myers today apparently.

Brian Duensing is struggling against the Rays right-handed hitters: long out to center from Jennings, triple from Upton...

Denard Span picks up the Twins first hit of the Grapefruit League season, a single that advanced Alexi Casilla, who had walked.

Joe Mauer single up the middle scores Casilla from 2B and cuts Twins deficit to 2-1.

Very nice second inning by Duensing. Got the two right-handed bats out on weak outs... struck out the lefty.

Danny Valencia with an opposite field double. Good sign for him as he has been asked to use the entire field again.

Is this game on mlb.tv? Or only audio?

John Bonnes

Sounds like Nishioka is in midseason form.

Jim Crikket

It's only on audio, John.

I'm turning it off. Iowa - Northwestern hoops about to begin and, frankly, I'm getting tired of having to re-log in every time I want to post a message in this thread. Not sure what the "timing out" setting is, but it irritates the hell outta me! :)

John Bonnes
03-03-2012, 01:52 PM
That just bit me, too, Jim. I'll see if I can change a setting.

I'm a little surprised the Rays would overshift Morneau. But I'm glad they did.

John Bonnes

Jim, it was set to 15 minutes. I've now reset it for an hour. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm a little surprised the Rays would overshift Morneau. But I'm glad they did.

Overshift as in shifting him to pull? That's because all he did in 2011 was yank the ball. He was pulling off almost every pitch.

Former Detroit Tiger Michael Hollimon with an RBI single to give the Twins a 3-2 lead.

Matt Carson alertly scores from 2nd on a Fielder's Choice off the bat of Nishioka. Pitcher was covering and didn't think to look at the runner. Carson took off and scored on a bad throw. 5-2 Twins.

Matt Maloney strikes out the side in the 8th.

Seth Stohs

Matt Maloney strikes out the side in the top of the 8th. Not a bad way to debut with a new organization. I'm guessing Mr. Krivsky has a big smile right about now.

Initial thoughts on Provus? Very smooth for ST game 1 Gladden seemed to really be in the background the first few innings

Nishioka now 2-3 after drilling a triple to the warning track in right-centerfield.

I'm really enjoying Provus. I honestly just can't take Gladden in more than occasional comments.

Chris Herrmann with an RBI single, scoring Nishioka from third, giving the Twins a 7-2 lead. Herrmann is good!

Provus has said a couple of times that the two players who have shown the most improvement with the bat from last year are Valencia and Nishioka.

John Bonnes
03-03-2012, 02:53 PM
I love that Gladden is warning us not to get to excited about Nishioka. Don't worry Dan.

Seth Stohs
03-03-2012, 03:10 PM
I think it's OK to be hopefully that Nishioka can be a representative utility infielder and hold his own defensively and offensively. Last year, he did neither. I'm willing to give him a little benefit of the doubt... at this point.

Jim Crikket

John - Thanks for adjusting the time-out setting.

Seth - I think Provus said early in the broadcast that he asked Vavra if anyone stood out to him in terms have having worked at improving their hitting in the offseason and he mentioned two guys, Valencia and Nishioka, as being much improved. I hope he's right on both counts.
