Naturally, the Twins gossip starts when I have to go to a lunch meeting ...

If this happens I would definitely miss Span but will be happy to watch Revere roam CF. I would love to see us get a Cingrani and maybe Didi

According to CBS Sports' Scott Miller (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/scott-miller/19695766/sources-reds-talking-denard-span-with-twins), the Reds, following the trade of Shane Victorino, are now increasing their efforts to land Denard Span from the Minnesota Twins. Once of Miller's sources said there is a "50/50" chance the deal gets done.

I've already prepared myself to be disappointed in the return haul...so bring it on JR.

Brock Beauchamp
07-31-2012, 12:58 PM
And this is why you wait to trade. That's probably my only real complaint with the Liriano trade. Teams get crazy and stupid in the last 24 hours of the deadline. Hopefully JR can take advantage of it.

Love the way Span plays and he's a great person, but we need to bolster our minor league pitching. Make this deal happen ASAP.

I think that would be fair value. Possible top of the rotation lefty and a middle infielder with upside. Both areas of great need.

Any of Cingrani, Sulbaran, or Lotzkar would be really good. Doubt the Reds would deal Didi Gregorius, but maybe they might be desperate enough. also would like to see twins pry off the reds Kyle Waldrop

Didn't the Twins just get their defensively gifted, offensively challenged SS of the future? Pitching, pitching and more pitching is what I want, and the Reds have a ton. I think it would be tough not to come away with at least one pitcher that would immediatly be top 1 or 2 in the system.

I don't think Didi is offensively challenged.

I wish Span was enough to get Billy Hamilton, but he is almost as untouchable as they come I bet.

Didi can hit, hopefully he'd settle in that .270/.330/.410 range while playing slick defense, HOPEFULLY!

He has shown little power, speed or on base skills at any level thus far. I don't understand what people are seeing in him.

EXACTLY

I've liked Didi Gregorious for about a year and a half now.

I'd DEMAND him 1st.....then decide which pitcher they want to give us.... they have 3 Sulbaran, Cingrani, and Corcino. I believe.

Watching the Rochester Columbus game. The Columbus announcers just mentioned that the Twins-REds were in serious discussions. A bit later mentioned that Span had turned down trade. May be same source.

Keep Span. The Reds may reconsider if their leadoff hitters stink on national TV in a first round loss in the playoffs.

Yeah, this. I really don't want to give up a guy like Span for a pu-pu platter. If we don't get a Gio/Latos/Pence like deal for him, don't trade him.

Cause the leadoff hitter is often the cause of a team losing a playoff series.

I'm all for getting a good return, but this sets the bar too high. Span is not considered above average at his position, by most. Should not expect to get the same haul for him.

Not really. He's on pace for about a 4.5-5.0 WAR season, coupled with a very team friendly contract. Gio/Latos were trades betting on future (one looks like it'll work out, the other maybe not) and Pence, like Span, was a bit more of a known quantity. Span is likely to be worth a ton over his remaining contract. You shouldn't trade him for a #3 starter and bullpen arm.

Later corrected. The Reds have declined. Not Span. I hope the networks error doesn't stick to Span or the Twins.

Not to hijack this thread (though there seem to be a few other Span/Reds threads, so maybe it would be OK), but being a real baseball writer/reporter is a tough gig these days. Either you aren't out there getting news regarding your assigned beat first (perhaps due to those pesky journalistic ethics that require multiple sources before reporting news) and thus you're "lazy" or you DO report (via social media) things you hear from only one source and you therefore get it wrong occasionally and you've "mindlessly tweeted whatever you want".

Kinda makes me glad I dropped out of journalism school.

Though definitely not Mike Trout in CF, Span is ranked #4 in UZR among all CFs for the seasons 2010-2012 (#3 in adjusted UZR/150) and is basically in the top 7 CFs this year in WAR.

Twins have no pressure to trade Span. It's a good sign that the Reds declined, rather see that than the Twins getting bullied around. Maybe he still gets traded today, but he's valuable to us as a player for his remaining contract and he'll be valuable in the off-season and next season for trades too.

If they lose in the first round they ARE going to look for ways to put them over the top by upgrading weaknesses, just like every club. As it turns out they have a weakness at CF and leadoff, which is why they had interest in Span in the first place.
