It sounds like Span is battling the flu...hopefully he's back tomorrow. Also, Mauer took BP today and could be available to pinch hit.

I think the reason that Walters will be able to stay in the majors is because he has such great variations in mph between his pitches. Against the first Cubs hitter, he had his fastball at 89 and his offspeed stuff at 73.

If Span has the same flu that I have been having, he could end up on the DL. There is a very nasty summer flu going around this year. And if other players catch it, we are going to be losing a lot of games for a while.

Not a good first inning for the "Wall." A HR and a triple. I hope that he is also not coming down with the flu.

Wow, I have no idea what a fielder has to do to be charged with an error. Dropping a routine, soft line drive sure doesn't do it.

Yeah, that's not a "hit" by Revere. That's not even a hit in little league.

After early trouble, the "Wall" is holding. Now we need to blast the Cubs' pitcher into oblivion and wear out their bullpen.

Hes not that slow anyway!!!!! Thats just bad management...... I would take plouff with another batting opportunity over casillas glove anyday as well

Perkins...uffdah. Single on 0-2 to a lefty in Dejesus, then a bomb to the worst player in the history of baseball*.

It definitely was a bad deal for the Cubs, but Soriano has a lot of competition for worst player category. If the Cubs are as desperate to get rid of them as the media reports, some team is going to get a pretty good DH option for the last couple years on his contract with the Cubs on the hook and paying most or all of it (like Zambrano).

That was two prodigious, Thome-like shots. How many triple-deck-to-left shots have been hit in Target?

Mauer not pinch hitting when the game is tied isn't a terrible decision. The result, of course, didn't work out but when you're tied and you have a limited bench you don't want to end up with poor fielders or players playing out of position. Gardenhire wanted his best defense in the late innings, figuring his bully would hold off the Cubs--that didn't work out. Then he put in a fast guy with Morneau at third and nobody out--while that didn't work out, the move is defensible. I didn't like Revere bunting in the tenth with Carroll hitting next, but his chopper got the job done.

Not only is Willingham the obvious choice, but he actually can go there on merit, and not just because the Twins need a representative.

I concur. This board is designed for armchair managing and second guessing (and I enjoy doing that as well!) but in the end we got the win. Whether it was luck or making the right calls, I'm not going to critique a manager when we get a W.

So if they hit Mauer for Casilla, doesn't he just get walked? And when you can score a run with an out, do you let Casilla hit for that reason (when considering that bringing in Mauer causes some "strange" defensive shuffling if there's extra innings)? As it was happening, I was thinking Mauer for Dozier instead of Casilla because of the "you can win with an out with Casilla up, but not Dozier" factor. If they HAD gone Mauer for either of them, does that make Masto go to 2B? And do the Cubs walk Mauer even if he hits for Dozier leaving Mastro as the pivotal batter? That was certainly a "if this happens, then what happens next" moment. Lots of things to consider.

Also, as I was watching without sound and not where I could pay full attention, would Carroll have been safe at third had he not slid past the bag?

I also happened to call a walk-off inside-the-parker...but Mastro had to go and ruin it by reaching base ahead of him. Such a me-first move.

Diamond should just walk Soriano every time he is up tonight. Diamond is the kind of lefty that Soriano destroys.
