Twins Acquire RHP Sam Dyson from Giants

According to Tommy Birch from the Des Moines Register, the Twins have acquired Giants relief pitcher Sam Dyson from the Giants.

The Twins traded OF Jaylin Davis and right-handed pitchers Kai-Wei Teng and Prelander Berroa.

In 49 games (51 innings), 31-year-old Sam Dyson is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP He's got seven walks and 47 strikeouts. Dyson also has one more year of arbitration remaining.

The Twins had need in the bullpen and they added two arms that can work in the late innings.

Jaylin Davis was well on his way to Twins Minor League Hitter of the Year this season. He began in AA Pensacola. He moved up to Rochester where he has hit over .330 and 15 homers in 41 games. Overall, he's not 25 homers in 99 games.

Kai-Wei Teng, a righty from Taiwan, joined the Kernels less than two months ago. He was 4-0 with a 1.60 ERA in 9 games (8 starts). He was flashing 96 mph with his fastball.

Prelander Berroa was the Elizabethton Twins opening day starter. The hard-throwing 19-year-old was 2-1 with a 4.55 ERA. He had 37 strikeouts in 31 2/3 innings.

The Twins got better today.

Advantage: Astros

Not a flashy bullpen, but it is much better than where we were at two weeks ago.

We now have

at the back end of our bullpen, plus Martin Perez in the postseason. Not bad. Not flashy, but not bad at all. Would have LOVED to get Robbie Ray, but I think that was a dream.

This sounded great.... until I saw that the 'Stros got Greinke. Still, picking up Dyson and Romo represents a good deadline. Option Poppen, call up Littel when his 10 day hold is over for either Stashak or Torpe. Major upgrade over Minor, Magill and Parker.

The Dbacks look like they did very well, depending on return for Greinke. Losing Davis hurts a little but I like this trade for the Twins. At least we did something, unlike NYY.

It was advantage Astros before any Astros trades.

Love Dyson's K/BB and WHIP this year, and he's kept it in the park. Probably his best season to date, and I want a hot hand if we're nabbing a reliever at the deadline. Plus he's controlled through 2020. Bonus that we didn't give up anybody in the top 30, and I think Davis would've had to have been protected this fall.

Still wanted more, but I like this trade in vacuum.

Sam Dyson at Oracle this year:

26.1 IP 0.34 ERA .393 OPS allowed

On the road:

24.2 IP 4.74 ERA .730 OPS allowed

Astros gave up their 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 22nd prospects (MLB.com rankings) for Greinke. The 3rd (Seth Beer) is the overall #100 (Larnach is the overall #97).

Prelander Berroa, Jaylin Davis and Kai-Wei Teng....(haven't seen confirmation on this)

Losing Davis is tough, yet, means the Twins get to keep someone else when the 40-man crunch comes in November. And who knows, maybe they wouldn't have room to add Davis and he would be gone anyway.

Personally, am gonna miss Teng. This kid had been great since his callup to Cedar Rapids.Have a feeling the Giants got a future starter...but hey, you have to give up something to get a good arm back.

Is Dyson a rental?Or under contract beyond this year?

I didn't realize Dyson's numbers were that good. A WHIP under 1? Nice. There's a Dyson vacuum joke to be made here but I've had a long day.

Glad they got some bullpen help, but would have liked to see more. Giants ended up selling, but kept MadBum and Smith. Weird.

I'm happy, I liked Sam Dyson when he was with the Marlins and wanted the Twins to trade for him two years ago when we made a run at the Wild card. I said it in another thread we will have to outhit teams and score a lot to win the whole dang thing. Yeah the Astros got Greinke but that doesn't guarantee anything. Hopefully one of our young guys steps up in the rotation to help matters. Not scared of the Indians I think we can hang with them this year. Color me pleased at least that they did not walk away with absolute nothing today.

Was this a pun? Well played, if so. Unlike the vacuums, let's hope that this Dyson doesn't suck.

That Greinke contract is terrifying. I'm pretty happy we don't have to deal with that.

$32 million per year for the next two years.

Then he's a free agent, and someone pays him $12.5 million per year in deferred money until 2026.

    • tarheeltwinsfan, gagu and wabene like this

Davis is EXACTLY the kind of trade chip I hoped they would use. Not because he's a bad player, but he is duplicated too much by others in the system.

I never like being the one to part with two young pitchers, but those are the coin of the realm. If they're the difference between making this trade, and not, then I think I'm fine with it. I leave it to the talent evaluators to determine which future Cy Young not to trade.

    • SQUIRREL, glunn, diehardtwinsfan and 22 others like this

Solid trade, added a solid veteran and didn't give up any top prospects to get him. Jaylin Davis is having a big year, but wasn't a top prospect and was blocked at the MLB level. Prelander Berroa and Kai-Wei Teng are basically lotto tickets-good young arms but a long ways off.

    • ashbury, glunn, 70charger and 5 others like this
Meh. Better than nothing.

Wow, what a flurry of last minute trades. Would have loved to be a fly on the wall and witness all the pandemonium going on in GM's offices across MLB. Are they equipped with oxygen and ventilators? Clear!

    • 70charger, MN_ExPat and wabene like this

Underwhelming, but better than nothing. I suppose you can argue that with Houston getting Grienke, the Twins getting Minor or even Stroman might not have mattered.

AND they're paying $50 million of the $75 owed Greinke the remainder of his contract.

Greinke's real advantage is that he can kinda hit if HOU makes it to the series.
