Twins Minor League Report (8/20): Royce Continues To Roll

Building a winning culture in an organization starts in the minor leagues. There has been a lot of losing in Minnesota leading into this season's surprise hunt for the playoffs. However, the Twins have been building up a solid young core throughout the organization which has started to garner some results.

Twins In Driver's Seat In Wild-Card Race

Some have criticized Major League Baseball's new postseason format, with two wild-card entrants in each league, as a celebration of mediocrity. Looking around at the teams racing against Minnesota for those spots, it's hard to disagree. When you examine the Angels, Mariners, Rangers, Royals, and basically the entire AL East after Boston, you don't see many stacked lineups or deep staffs.

But that's exactly why the flawed Twins have a very realistic shot, in the driver's seat even, three weeks after a deflating slump pushed them into seller mode at the deadline.

MIN 12, ARI 5: Twins Sweep Arizona, Have Won 11 of Last 14

It was all smiles and high fives in the Twins dugout as they crushed the Diamondbacks to complete the sweep Sunday afternoon. They’ve now won four in a row and 11 of their last 14 games. As a sign things have truly turned the corner for the Twins, they forced an opposing team to use a position player as a pitcher. Good to see the other guys have to revert to that tactic.

MIN 5, ARI 0: Berri-0s

Jose Berrios was due for another phenomenal performance. He pitched seven shutout innings as the Twins beat the Diamondbacks 5-0 on the night No. 5, Michael Cuddyer, was inducted into the Twins Hall of Fame. Miguel Sano left this game with soreness in his left shin.

Twins Minor League Report (8/19): Niko Goodrum Homers, Drives in 6 Runs

Niko Goodrum had a monster game for the IL Wild Card-leading Red Wings, driving in six runs. Also, the Kernels managed to win 1-0 behind a Travis Blankenhorn homer, Clark Beeker won his FSL debut, Brent Rooker hit yet another homer, Lachlan Wells returned to the mound and much, much more.

Find out everything that happened in the Twins minor league system on Saturday.

MIN 10, ARI 3: Buxton Inside-the-Parker Highlights 6 HR Game for Twins

Byron Buxton hit an inside-the-park home run and the Twins clubbed five more homers over the fence in a late-inning barrage of offense against the Diamondbacks Friday night. Buxton ended the game a single short of hitting for the cycle.

Twins Minor League Report (8/18): Grand Slams, Stewart’s AAA Debut, and Rooker Highlight Friday’s Action (but there’s so much more!)

Twins affiliates were undefeated on Friday night, putting another exclamation point on an incredible display of power throughout the organization. The Twins hit six home runs in the majors, there were two grand slams and a few other big spot blasts in the minors. The biggest may have come from a Miracle hitter who completed a comeback victory. Oh, and Kohl Stewart made his debut in the International League.

I tried my best, but so many awesome things happened on Friday that I couldn’t possibly highlight them all with a catchy title, so you’re just going to have to continue reading to find out about it all!

Game Thread: Twins v Diamondbacks, 8/18 @ 7:10pm CT

And… we move onto the Diamondbacks, starting a 3-game series at Target Field tonight. This is some tough pitching back to back. The Indians are 3rd overall in team ERA at 3.63, The D-Backs are currently 2nd at 3.61… it’s called out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Things can sure change from year to year in this crazy game. Last year… Twins pitching was pretty bad yet only 29th overall in Team ERA with a 5.08 because the D-Backs came in dead last with a 5.09. That Arizona team looks like a distant memory now.

Also consider this… of the 10 teams with the worst records in 2016… 5 of them (Twins, D-Backs, Rays, Brewers and Angels) are either holding a playoff spot or within 3 games of a playoff spot at this moment.

Baseball teams are like eggs… they can suddenly produce a chicken on you. And… and… down the road… those chickens will lay an egg.

Or baseball teams are like chicken depending on your own personal philosophy.

Here are some things to think about:

Twins Building Off The Mound

One hundred and nineteen games into the 2017 Major League Baseball season, the Minnesota Twins find themselves hovering one game above the .500 mark. Looking back to where they were a year ago at this time, they’ve taken a massive leap forward. Considering how 2017 has gone, Paul Molitor’s club can certainly pat themselves on the back. Pitching has once again been an adventure, but this club has weathered the storm.

Twins Minor League Report (8/17): Relievers Starting, Royce Rolling, And An Incredible Comeback For The Lookouts

The Twins dropped a truly frustrating game in the first half of a doubleheader, and then rode a great debut from Aaron Slegers over 6.1 innings, to win the nightcap. And Glen Perkins pitched for the first time in 10,000 days, or close to that.

Find out everything that happened in the Twins minor league system on Thursday, including three different relievers starting games!

Recap: Slegers Shines in Debut, Twins Split Doubleheader

Aaron Slegers was excellent in his major league debut Thursday, helping the Twins take the second game of their doubleheader and put an ugly loss in the first contest behind them. Glen Perkins also made his 2017 debut, but the Twins unfortunately lost Robbie Grossman to a fractured thumb.

St. Paul Saints, Season on the Brink

My oh my, what an up and down season this has become for our Saints. After closing within inches of a playoff spot with their last four-game winning streak, a recent five-game losing streak has put them on the brink of being eliminated from playoff contention.

As of August 17th, with 18 games remaining in the regular season, the Saints sit eight games back of first place Winnipeg in the North, and five games back of Kansas City in the wild card race. Let’s take a look at how they got here, the full playoff picture, and their upcoming home stand.
