Twins Minor League Report (8/28): Nick Gordon Plays Well

The Minnesota Twins exploded for six runs in the top of the tenth inning after they squandered three early game runs and beat the Kansas City Royals. Jordan Schafer continues to hit the ball well for the Twins and he had three more hits on Thursday against Kansas City.

Down in the minor leagues the season is entering the final weekend. Let's take a look at the affiliates.

What To Make Of Jordan Schafer

First it was Sam Fuld, now the Minnesota Twins front office have worked their waiver wire magic on Jordan Schafer.

On Thursday night, Schafer continued his unpredictably solid batsmanship against the Royals. In five at-bats, he collected three hits including a double, drove in three, scored another two on his own and also swiped a base. Just another day at the office for Schafer who is now hitting .328/.411/.438 in 77 plate appearances since coming over to the Twins.

Who would have seen this coming?

Non-Roster Hopefuls

As Labor Day approaches and fall soon sets in, it's hard to believe that the baseball season is already almost five months complete. Monday is September 1st, and in baseball, that means September call-ups. We have discussed several players who could be promoted. The Twins certainly have a number of options. However, there are a handful of guys not on the 40-man roster who should at least be discussed in the September promotion talks.

Twins Minor League Report (8/27): Hinojosa Plays Hero

Three one-run games. Three extra-inning games. Two teams clinched division titles on Wednesday night. Though the Cedar Rapids Kernels had already clinched a playoff spot, with the help of an unlikely power source, they were able to claim a number one seed in the playoffs. Elizabethton makes it a habit of being in the playoffs and with their win tonight they will return again.

Check out all that and more below in today’s Twins Minor League Report for Wednesday.

Twins Minor League Report (8/26): Turner Lifts Miracle

Byron Buxton is heading back to the Arizona Fall League. At least that is the hope of the Twins organization as rosters were announced for the AFL on Tuesday. Buxton will be looking to make up for lost time after a brutal outfield collision in his first Double-A game left him with a concussion. He will have to pass all MLB-level concussion protocols before taking the field in the AFL.

Buxton is among a trio of prospects heading back to Arizona for a second year. Eddie Rosario and Max Kepler are set to rebound from various issues this year. Rosario was suspended for the first 50 games and Kepler struggled before coming on strong in recent weeks.

Only One Spot to Address for 2015?

At a glance, the title of this article might seem a little outrageous. How could one suggest that a team on track for 90 losses needs so little retooling?

Well, when you look at the lineup that the Twins fielded on Tuesday night -- one which is very similar to those they've been trotting out regularly in recent weeks -- it's hard to find more than one spot that is going to need to be addressed externally this offseason.

Twins in Arizona

On Thursday afternoon, MLB announced its 2014 Arizona Fall League rosters. Six Minnesota Twins were announced as members of the Salt River Rafters, including a couple of their top prospects. According to Dustin Morse, the Twins will add an additional pitcher. The season will open on October 7.

The Arizona Fall League is a good place for some of baseball’s best prospects. It’s also a great place for players who missed time during the regular season to get some playing time. The Twins have sent some who fit into either of these categories, and sometimes both.

Trevor Plouffe: Third Base or Utility Role

Trevor Plouffe has been the Twins third baseman since the middle of 2012. He is the Twins' longest-serving starter at his current position on the team. That is a bit hard to believe, but every position has turned over since the Twins handed Plouffe third base out of desperation. Plouffe responded to his assignment by having a once-in-a-lifetime power surge. Most other parts of his game as a third baseman were substandard.

Now, late in the 2014 season, we see a different player.
